Wow, November sucks!

I’m going to have to try real hard to prioritize my thankfulness as the over-riding emotional sensation tomorrow. We’re driving from Portland to Seattle and back in one day, to basically spend 6 hours with Ryan’s sister and her girlfriend.

I HATE having to drive so much on the holiday. A few years ago we were driving all over kingdom come so that we could spend the holidays with each side of our family.
So we’d drive to one city to see his parents, another city to see my dad, another to see my mom. It was horrible. When Nico came along we decided to split up the holidays to prevent all of the stress that comes from keeping a kid in the car for half the day.

Of course, the next year Ryan’s sister started cooking his family’s thanksgiving meal instead of his mom, and then she up and moved to Seattle. We’ve committed ourselves to the damn “last year we spent thanksgiving with family A, so this year we’ll spend it with family B” at least through this year, so we’re fucked. 7 hours of driving with a toddler.

On the other hand, at least we’ll be together; although Ryan has a tendency to pass out when I’m driving. I’d bring a squirt gun or something, but that just gets him grouchy.

I guess the best news is that so far I’m completely lucid and fever free, so perhaps I’ll manage to avoid my annual sick-fest.

Oh, and the double best news is I’m posting this soooo early that I might be able to pre-write something for tomorrow! Woot!

  1. woohoo, a lesbo thanksgiving.

    have a good one.

  2. My parents divorced when our youngest was born, so, with three sets of grandparents, holidays sucked for many years. It took me longer than it took you to realize that our own little family had precedence over the larger family. So the one thing I emphasize with our kids is that their families come first. We miss them when they’re not here, but we always know, when they are here, that they are here because they want to be. This makes us all very happy!

Happy Thanksgiving. I hope your trip is a lovely adventure that will make you smile when you remember it.
