The haircut has been a long time coming, 4.5 years almost to the day to be exact. I’ve thought about cutting it the entire time, my enthusiasm waxing and waning by the hour. But, I did love his long hair. Even through the constant, 100% gauranteed gender assignment issues that it created when we ventured into public realms. Even through the daily fighting over hair brushing and conditioning and clips and bands. Considering his first reaction to any kind of mess was to lay right in it and smear his hair around real good, his hair has always occupied a space on the Nasty spectrum. But, it was my baby’s beautiful hair. The tips, the same that I’d rubbed against my cheek just minutes after he’d been born. I loved it all the while I was thinking about chopping it off.

So, after sitting on that fence for over four years, when he bolted out of bed at the ungodly hour of 1am and declared that he wanted to cut his hair, I made note. And when the next day came and he continued to express a desire for new, shorter hair, I bought scissors. And when I told him I was going to do it, and he was willing to actually let me brush it so that I could, well.. I was pretty sure that he was pretty sure and so I did.

oh fuck you that last post totally counted. HOWEVER, lucky lucky you I did something today that brought me right back to the old blog. Not often that I get a chance to post a teaser like this one. I’ll give you 2 hints about what I’ll be posting tomorrow.

that happens to be Thanksgiving! hope it’ s nuclear.

damn. The disposable camera photos pretty much suck, and the 1 hr photo people forgot to make a picture disk (and I forgot to check before I left). The inlaws did get a few cute ones of the boy during his milestone First Night Away, but nothing good enough to motivate me to drive back down to the photo developer. So surreal to see little glimpses of him doing things without me, living a life apart from me. I am glad I have a long while to get used to the idea.

Speaking of the boy, he’s at school again. Again, he was super excited to go. I was a little worried that the love might wear off over the course of the week, but it’s still going strong. I was able to pick up our MASSIVE turkey and do some last minute shopping for Thanksgiving 2009-2/3. I’ll have to go shopping again on Friday to prepare for our final Thanksgiving of the year. Tomorrow it will just be the Radish family and my dad, so I’m making a simple meal. Arugula, pecan and cranberry salad, elk lasagna (the same animal that dad and Ryan shot last year), and chocolate pie. Saturday will be the Radish family and my mom, with the traditional thanksgiving spread.

For the record, and my own future reference: Altered sucked. We had seen it before in a previous wave of Blair Witch obsession. I wasn’t able to finish it then, or now. We also watched Choke last night, and that also sucked, but now I can mail it back. Next delivery should have some Heather Donahue in it.

And, without trying for any kind of stream of logic here at all, I will say that it is VERY nice to have a few hours to do errands during the day without having to drag the boy with me or worry about leaving him with my mom. I am almost tempted to keep Wednesday as a short school day for him, but dang… the money. The money, and the simultaneous sensation of wanting to suck up every minute I can with him. Very hard to resolve.

oooh, I think I almost missed a day there. I planned to throw something up real quick, but once I got done putting Hyper Boy to sleep I immediately picked up where I left off with this 70 minute interview with the old Blair Witch peops. Seems that Paranormal Activity reawakened my little Blair obsession. I’ve been restocking my netflix queue with all the crap that the directors and actors have been making over the last 10 years and poking around their web sites and wiki pages. I’ve got Altered lined up on the PS3 for some instant watching and it’s all downhill from there, really. In the meantime, back to the excruciatingly boring interview.

er, still not recovered from the trip? facing another late bed time? butting up against my time for House? i don’t know, whatever reason is most believable to you, THAT is why I’m wimping out with another short paragraph, single photo post. I’m hoping to get the disposable cameras from our trip developed over the next couple of days, so there is a hint of promise for my future here. Today, however, is crap. That’s just what comes with daily blogging.

The overnight trip went really well. Nico had an absolute blast, and again did not want to leave. Ryan and I had a nice time, though we had some issues with the service.

I’m still caught up in the post-trip recovery, and also in the middle of what is turning out to be a rotten, no-good bed time. So I will keep this short and leave you with this, our view from the hotel bed:

The movie was ok. It was quick and entertaining and a good watch, but it was NOT scary. I think I also have a hard time being disturbed by supernatural phenomenon. That, and it’s just not scary to me to see a weegy(sp) board catch fire, or a door move. I am glad that we saw it in the theater, as the spine tingling vibe in the room did add some apprehension to the movie. Our surrounding movie patrons DID appear to be in the grips of fear throughout. Overall, I’d give it 3 out of 4 using the horror  movie rating system, which I do not use to rate other kinds of movies. For the record, Blair Witch was 1,342,568% better.

Another movie is in the works for tonight, if the timing works out. I surprised Ryan with a night at a local hotel chain that we like, the grandparents are going to watch Nico. It will be the first night of its kind, and a long time coming, so it will be nice. We’ll drop off the boy, have dinner, see Men who Laugh at Goats, and see where the night leads us. Nico is actually looking forward to his visit, what with the cookie making and movie watching and brand new toys and all. But he has assured me that he will not sleep tonight, and I half believe him.

Turns out there’s no end to this gardening thing. Three of our rows are still going strong with fall/winter food production. The other two are planted with cover crops that include fava beans. We’re going to be hauling 2 cubic yards of mushroom compost for the garden next week, so some back breaking labor is still in the works. And I’ll be on slug and bug patrol for the rest of my life. Add to that, I now have to contend with the muddy and wet cloches any time I want to check on/harvest our leafy things, I am amazed by how much damn work a garden is. I love it and I hate it and I recognize that it doesn’t matter how I feel about it because I still have to do it. At least I can blog about it.

Oh I do not like blogging this late, and after a difficult bed time. This is exactly not something that I am interested in doing right now.Payback for yesterdays early post I guess. And, for the nap that Nico got this afternoon. That boy needs to quit with the pre-3am wakeups.

He loved school yesterday. Absolutely did not want to leave, was not excited to see me, and spent the whole rest of the day talking about how he wanted to go back. Immediately. And to never leave again. All very, very good things, though it would have been icing on the cake for the pick-up to have gone a bit smoother. I am deeply relieved and grateful for our new set up. It’s a good fit for him, and a nice transitional opportunity considering I APPLIED FOR SCHOOL for him yesterday. Honest to goodness school for my soon to be five year old. Intense shit man.

I’ll give you a moment to resettle yourself, I know those are three very shocking words. I wouldn’t say that it’s an all day, every day type of sentiment, but it is dramatically different than, say, 6 months ago. 3 months even. I have some theories about it, but the ultimate reality that I am presented with is this: by tomorrow, I will have seen 2 (two) movies within 2 (two) months of each other. With a friend. With Ryan putting the boy to bed. CRAZY! And, I’ve met a couple of people in the evening for drinks and grown up chit chat, or just some time alone. My life seems to have entered it’s magical phase.

And so, off to look up Paranormal Activity show times. Maybe I should be doing some kegels so I don’t wet my pants, I hear it’s pretty scary. Though, I’ll believe it when I see it.
